Drawing on our many years of expertise in Magento development and extension purchases, we’ve put together a list of 5 things you must consider before purchasing a 3rd party extension.

  1. Never Assume - It is important that you DO NOT assume that the extension satisfies your requirements based solely on the description and screenshots of the extension. Make sure that you browse their demo site and play with the features. Always send an email to their support team to confirm what you are planning to do with the extension and be sure to get an email confirmation that their extension provides all its given features.

  2. Research your Provider's Reputation - The extension provider’s reputation is important because it tells you whether they can support these extensions for a longer run. If you end up buying an extension from a new and inexperienced provider, there’s a good chance that the provider may shutdown. If that happens, the provider won’t be able to do security or version releases in the near future, making it a complicated affair to maintain the extension.

  3. Check Their Release Cycle - It is important that you check if the given extension matches the latest version of Magento. You should always check their release notes; a good extension should have releases every time a new Magento version comes out and be adding new features and bug fixes when applicable.

  4. Ensure a Money Back Guarantee - This is non-negotiable. A good extension provider should have confidence in the extension they are providing. There’s a solid possibility your purchased extension might conflict with another extension you are using, or the functionality they are offering is not what you anticipated. Ensure they offer you a refund guarantee.

  5. Investigate their Support Model and Reviews - Check for reviews on Magento’s marketplace as well as the support period. Be sure to discuss with the provider what happens after the support period ends. Here are some key questions you should ask them:

    • If I purchase the extension, would I still be receiving the version updates and upgrades from you?

    • How will you help me find a bug in the extension if it is affecting my business?

    • Do you have any service-level agreements to help me out? Would you charge anything for that?

Make sure you have all these queries clarified.

One last tip to keep in mind: Having too many 3rd party extensions from different vendors has been known to slow down an eCommerce website. Don’t buy an extension if it only resolves one of your problems, because you will be getting numerous other solutions included that you may not use.
